Some of these companies are presently developing a high-technology-oriented production in order to compete with the ever increasing competition from low-cost production countries in Asia. Known worldwide mainly for its exports of fashion, food, luxury vehicles and motor yachts, Italy today also exports motor vehicles, aerospace and defense technology, chemicals, petrochemicals and electrical goods.
Malta is a densely populated developed European microstate in the European Union. The island nation comprises an archipelago of seven islands situated in the Southern European areas of the Mediterranean sea, 93 km off the coast of Sicily (Italy), 288 km east of Tunisia and 300 km north of Libya. It is a country renowned for its world heritage sites, most prominently the Megalithic Temples which are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. According to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island. Malta is also considered a potential location for the mythical lost island of Atlantis. The country’s official languages are Maltese and English, which replaced Italian in 1934. Malta has a long legacy of Roman Catholicism, which continues to be the official and dominant religion in Malta.
The Swiss Canton of Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland. The canton gets its name from the Ticino river and is the only canton in Switzerland where Italy is the official language. Ticino borders the Canton of Uri to the north, Valais to the west, Graubünden to the north, with the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy to the south. The Canton of Ticino is also regularly referred to the Italian Switzerland. By 600 both the Churraetie and Alemannia had become part of the Franconian Empire. At the same time the country was Christianized and in 800 became part of the Holy Roman Empire. About 1200 the St Gotthard Pass was used to open up the Alpine valleys to trade from both the north and south of Europe. Throughout the 1300s various regions joined the Swiss Confederation and in 1414 it expanded to also include Ticino.
