DESTINATIONS

ITALY

You have arrived at last, in the Bel Paese, a nation that has collectively in the same boot, as Italians affectionately refer to the peninsula, a wide range of cultures, traditions, dialects, cuisines and lifestyles. Italy is a modern, industrialized nation. Generally speaking the Italian economy is driven by small and medium size companies. Some of these companies are presently developing a high-technology-oriented production in order to compete with the ever increasing competition from low-cost production countries in Asia. Known worldwide mainly for its exports of fashion, food, luxury vehicles and motor yachts, Italy today also exports motor vehicles, aerospace and defense technology, chemicals, petrochemicals and electrical goods.

According to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island. Malta is also considered a potential location for the mythical lost island of Atlantis. TICINO (CH)

The Swiss Canton of Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland. The canton gets its name from the Ticino river and is the only canton in Switzerland where Italy is the official language. Ticino borders the Canton of Uri to the north, Valais to the west, Graubünden to the north, with the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy to the south. The Canton of Ticino is also regularly referred to the Italian Switzerland. By 600 both the Churraetie and Alemannia had become part of the Franconian Empire. At the same time the country was Christianized and in 800 became part of the Holy Roman Empire. About 1200 the St Gotthard Pass was used to open up the Alpine valleys to trade from both the north and south of Europe. Throughout the 1300s various regions joined the Swiss Confederation and in 1414 it expanded to also include Ticino.
