Let’s say you want to move to Italy, but you can’t choose in which city, or, your company will relocate you and don’t know what to expect from your new city.

Well, in both cases you should keep reading as what follows is the 2025 Quality of Life Index in Italy. (1)

The index observed 107 Italian cities and took into account different factors such as safety, services, wealth and leisure time. Considering these factors, at the top of the index we will find cities where there are higher safety levels, more services, a better distributed wealth and more leisure time for residents and their family.

Most of the top positions of the index are occupied by northern cities; on the podium there are Trento, Bolzano and Udine. Among the main cities, Bologna narrowly missed the podium and got the fourth place, while Milan is sixth. In the middle positions of the index there are Florence at the thirty-sixth place and Rome at forty-sixth – the capital city improved and climbed eleven positions compared to 2024. Going towards south, the best cities are Bari, Campobasso and Matera, respectively at sixty-seventh, seventy-third and seventy-ninth position.

As for the islands, Sardinia got a higher position in the index, with Cagliari at the thirty-ninth place; while in Sicily the highest position in the index are taken by Ragusa and Enna, respectively at eighty-second and eighty-seventh place.

In the end, if you are really convinced about living in a specific Italian city, among all the beautiful things that you are going to love, you will also learn to embrace its flaws. Only in this way you can fully understand the place you live in.
