If you have relocated in Italy, you must know that we Italians have a saying: “sarà colpa della primavera”. When spring comes, whatever problem an Italian has, it’s spring’s fault. You’re sleepy? It’s spring’s fault. You feel your head in the clouds? It’s spring’s fault. You spend almost the entire day sneezing? Surely, it’s spring’s fault.
This poor season, however, is actually the symbol of nature and human rebirth. After a long and cold winter, it’s surely nice waking up with a warm beam of sunlight passing through the window. But what one can do during springtime in Italy? Here’s the upcoming seasonal holidays in Italy!
First upcoming holiday is Easter. Also for the period of Easter, we have a saying: “Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi”, which can be translated as “Christmas with your family, Easter with whoever you want”. Nowadays, it is common for Italian people to spend Easter with friends, often abroad. Indeed, usually for the Easter holiday offices are closed for a few days and schools are closed for a week. If they don’t go abroad, it is a must-do activity for Italians doing barbecues or picnics in parks on Easter Monday. However, be careful because there is a curse – on Easter Monday it always rains!
The 25th of April is Liberation Day. Officially, this is the day when in 1945 the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy proclaimed a general insurrection in all the territories still occupied by the Nazi-fascists. Indeed, many marches and demonstrations are organized all over Italy. Also on this day it’s common to do barbecues and outside activities. A very popular destination is Castelli Romani, the area outside Rome that comprehends places such as Ariccia, Castel Gandolfo, Genzano di Roma, and Nemi.
Next, we have the 1st of May, which is Labor Day, celebrated not only in Italy but also in Europe and outside. If you love music, this day is for you: in the main Italian cities huge free concerts with very famous Italian singers and performers are organized. The most famous one is Rome’s – every year on the 1st of May the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran’s square fills with people ready to listen some good music.
Wherever you are in Italy, spring is the perfect season to enjoy art, nature, and culture!
