Why Move to Malta

Moving to Malta is an exciting opportunity, combining history, culture, and modern living in one of the Mediterranean’s most charming settings. Just 93 km south of Sicily, this small EU island nation offers warm summers, mild winters, and year-round outdoor activities. English, alongside Maltese, is an official language, which makes daily life and integration much easier for newcomers.

Why choose Malta? The country is safe, welcoming, and home to a thriving expat community. It has a strong economy with opportunities in tourism, finance, and technology, while still offering a lower cost of living compared to many Western European countries. On top of that, it’s well connected to the rest of Europe and North Africa, making travel simple.

  • Sunny Climate: Malta enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, with mild winters and hot summers that make outdoor living a true pleasure.
  • Vibrant Expat Community: English is an official language and a wide international community ensures you’ll feel at home from day one, with countless events and networks to join.
  • Strategic Location: Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta offers easy access to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, plus excellent air and sea connections.
  • Attractive Tax Regime: Competitive corporate and personal tax schemes, along with special residency programs, make Malta a highly appealing destination for individuals and businesses alike.

Where to Live

depends on your lifestyle. Singles often prefer lively areas like St. Julian’s, Sliema, or Paceville. Couples may also enjoy Swieqi, Balluta Bay, or Kappara, while families often look at Birkirkara, Mellieha, Msida, or quieter corners of Sliema and St. Julian’s. Rent varies widely:

  • 1-bedroom apartments: €1,000–€2,000/month
  • 2-bedroom apartments: €1,400–€2,800/month
  • 3-bedroom apartments: €1,700–€4,000/month

Prices depend on location, size, and condition. Utilities are usually not included and cost around €100–€150 for one person, €150–€200 for a couple, and €200–€300 for a family. Landlords often keep bills in their name and ask tenants to reimburse monthly.

Getting Around is Easy

Malta International Airport (MIA) is the only airport, with good connections across Europe and North Africa. Public buses are affordable and cover both Malta and Gozo, with discounts available through the resident Tallinja card. Driving is on the left, and your national license is valid for up to 12 months. After that, you may need to switch to a Maltese license if you plan to stay longer.

Immigration

Immigration is straightforward for EU citizens, while non-EU nationals usually need a work permit. Fast-track options exist, like the EU Blue Card or the Key Employment Initiative, for skilled professionals and managers who meet salary and qualification requirements.

Family reunification is also possible, provided you can show financial stability and suitable housing.
